The Last Night

Monica Brown

Characters:

Sarah Moore: 18 years old, wearing a blue beret, blue shirt, pink skirt, and a red crossbody bag. Amy’s long term girlfriend.
Amy Campbell: 18 years old, wearing a pink beret, a blue sweater, and blue jeans along with a black crossbody bag. Sarah’s long term girlfriend.

Setting: Present day in a small town in Missouri. Late evening in the later half of summer and just a few minutes before sunset. A field of grass and flowers surrounded by trees and bushes. The sky is clear and the air is slightly windy. It’s almost silent, with the only noise in the background coming from local crickets and cicadas. Sarah and Amy are sitting center stage with a blanket beneath them.

SARAH

It’s beautiful out tonight, isn't it?

[Amy nods her head in agreement but doesn’t say anything. Her shoulders are slumped, she appears to be sad. Sarah looks over and nudges her arm, slightly pushing her to

the side.]

SARAH
Why are you so sad? C’mon, it’s our last night together. Let’s enjoy this moment while it lasts.

AMY

[Amy looks over at Sarah. She speaks softly.)

So...when do you leave?

[Sarah takes a deep breath before responding.]

SARAH
6 a.m. tomorrow. My flight doesn’t leave until 8 but my mom wants me to get there early just in
case, you know?

[Amy nods, understanding. Sarah and Amy sit in silence for a few moments, just enjoying each other’s company.]

SARAH

Do you remember our first date? [pause] You were so shy and nervous to be around me. You
just kept rambling on and on about some movie you watched and you got so excited that you
accidentally spilled soda all over my dress.

[Sarah begins to laugh while Amy is visibly cringing.]

AMY

[covering her eyes in embarrassment]

God, that was so embarrassing. I can’t believe you wanted a second date after that.

SARAH

Hey! I thought it was kind of cute.

[Amy joins in the laughing and this continues for a few seconds until Amy’s laughter turns into crying.]

AMY

[crying]

I don’t know what I’m going to do without you. I... I...

[Amy trails off as the words get stuck in her throat. Sarah wraps her arms around her and hugs her.]

SARAH

[softly]

Hey, it’s going to be okay. I know it’s going to be hard, but it’ll only be for a few months. We can call, text, and I’ll even come visit on my breaks. We’ll be okay.

[This makes Amy cry harder. Sarah consoles her as she tries to hold her own tears in. Then, Amy wipes her tears away.]

AMY

[apologetic]

Sorry, I think I may have gotten some snot on your sweater.

[Sarah laughs and shrugs it off.]

SARAH

[laughing]

That’s okay, I don’t mind.

[They look each other in the eyes and stay like that for two to three seconds before they begin to lean in. They share a short kiss and then pull away.]

SARAH

I’m going to miss you so much.

[pause]

I love you.

[Amy smiles.]

AMY
I love you too.

[They stare at each other, smiling. Then, Amy looks behind her and see the sun beginning to set.]

AMY
Look!

[They quickly turn around to look at the sky. Amy lays her head on Sarah’s shoulder and looks up at the sky.]

AMY
The sky looks beautiful.

[Sarah looks up at the sky and then looks down at Amy.]

SARAH
Yeah, it does.

[Sarah and Amy watch as the sun gets lower, and the sky turns orange. Sarah looks back at Amy, holding her gaze for a few moments. Then, Sarah bursts into tears and now it’s Amy’s turn to comfort her. Amy begins to cry again. They stay holding each other, crying together and watching the sun set.]
[Curtain.]
